Mid-Session: Sensex off record highs; IT stocks weigh

The benchmark BSE Sensex retreated from record highs to trade up by 26 points on good bouts of buying in metal, industrial, capital goods, auto, energy, banks and financials amid higher Asian cues.Profit booking in IT, Teck and telecom counters pulled the index back from record high level.

Investors were cautious ahead of Q3 results by Infosys to be released later in the day after the country's largest IT firm TCS posted a 3.9 per cent drop in profit and a 2.7 per cent increase in revenue for the October-December quarter.Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 623.63 crore on net basis while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities to the tune of Rs 770.02 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

At 12:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 34530.05 up by 26.56 points or by 0.08 per cent NSE Nifty was at 10659.55 up by 8.35 points or by 0.08 per cent. Sensex touched intraday high of 34638.42 and intraday low of 34521.39 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10690.25 and intraday low of 10652.6.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 946.50,+0.99%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 312.40,+0.95%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 9430.05,+0.95%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1753.20,+0.71%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 437.10,+0.61%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2753.00,-1.27%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 508.25,-1.26%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 582.55,-0.99%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 318.55,-0.78%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 340.50,-0.61%), among others.

Among the sectors, Metal index was at 15863.24 up by 87.91 points or by 0.56%. JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 287.30,+1.47%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 337.80,+1.17%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 323.45,+1.11%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 268.75,+0.34%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 98.50,+0.25%),.

On the flip side, Realty index was at 2783.01 down by -21.58 points or by -0.77%. Oberoi Realty Ltd. (Rs. 537.00,-2.95%), Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 596.45,-2.00%), Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 595.75,-1.41%), Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 834.00,-1.13%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 268.15,-0.89%),. The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2971 , shares advanced were 1485 while 1349 shares declined and 137 were unchanged
