Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty trade in red; broader markets shine

The Indian equities continued to trade in negative terrain on Thursday, tracking weak cues from Asian peers, as investor weighed on going political drama in Karnataka. Bucking the trend, the broader markets were trading higher, with MidCap and SmlCap indices gaining as much as 0.48 per cent and 0.31 per cent, respectively. Shares of Jyothy Laboratories continued gaining streak for the second session on Thursday and rallied over 17 per cent after its board recommended issue of bonus shares in the ratio of 1:1 i.e. one bonus share for every one share held, following strong earnings in March quarter.

At 12:40 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 35277.62 down by -110.26 points or by -0.31 % and then NSE Nifty was at 10708.95 down by -32.15 points or by -0.3 per cent.

In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 35510.01 and intraday low of 35227.77, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10777.25 and intraday low of 10696.85.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 607.75,-2.30%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1885.70,-1.52%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 1969.95,-1.21%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 544.00,-0.97%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 400.40,-0.87%), among others.

On the flip side, Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 315.85,+1.76%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 278.20,+1.42%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 267.85,+1.19%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 185.25,+0.95%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1588.40,+0.90%), were among top gainers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, metal and bankex stocks emerged as top losers on BSE, falling as much as 1 per cent and 0.29 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was flat. On BSE out of total shares traded 2597, shares advanced were 1259 while 1212 shares declined and 126 were unchanged.
