Sensex pares gains, slips below all-time high

Indian benchmarks pared most of the early gain amid profit booking with S&P BSE Sensex trading below its all-time high.

Investors are also likely to react to key inflation data which came post market hours on Thursday. The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation rate rose to a five-month high of 5 per cent in June, overshooting the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) projection of 4.8-4.9 per cent in the first half of 2018-19, shows the official data released on Thursday. Separately, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) slowed to a seven-month low of 3.2 per cent in May.

At 10:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 36585.09 up by 36.68 points or by 0.1 per cent, while the then NSE Nifty was at 11017.2 down by 6 points or by 0.05 per cent.

Sensex touched intraday high of 36740.07 and intraday low of 36548.99 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11071.35 and intraday low of 11007.7.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 284.40,+1.75%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1312.00,+1.34%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1094.95,+1.18%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 267.50,+0.87%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 372.45,+0.84%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 258.05,-1.79%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 369.45,-1.43%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 530.00,-1.35%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 268.95,-1.27%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 157.15,-1.19%), among others.

Among the sectors, IT index was at 14426.54 up by 90.05 points or by 0.63%. Tanla Solutions Ltd. (Rs. 41.50,+4.40%), MphasiS Ltd. (Rs. 1213.00,+3.71%), Trigyn Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 133.00,+2.70%), 8K Miles Software Services Ltd. (Rs. 349.65,+2.49%), 3i Infotech Ltd. (Rs. 4.14,+1.97%),.

On the flip side, Realty index was at 2063.01 down by -26.55 points or by -1.27%. Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 467.10,-3.78%), Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd. (Rs. 151.50,-2.76%), Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 642.00,-1.89%), Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 267.05,-1.66%), Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 19.55,-1.51%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2071 , shares advanced were 653 while 1329 shares declined and 89 were unchanged.
